Starting with the right drawing template is essential for maintaining consistency, clarity, and efficiency in your documentation. A solid foundation can save time and prevent errors down the line—especially in a collaborative engineering environment.

Below, I’ve linked downloadable SolidWorks drawing templates for both the first sheet and second sheet formatted for legal size paper (8.5 x 14). These templates are ideal if you need more space than standard letter size but want to avoid going all the way to tabloid or ANSI B formats.

How to Add Templates to SolidWorks

To use these templates in SolidWorks, follow these steps:

  1. Unzip the Template Files
Download and unzip the folder containing the drawing templates.
  2. Open SolidWorks System Options
In SolidWorks, go to: pgsqlCopyEditTools > Options > System Options
  3. Set Template File Location
    • In the left-hand panel, select File Locations.
    • From the drop-down list, choose Document Templates.
    • Click Add…, and browse to the folder where you unzipped the templates.
    • Click OK to save the new file location.
  4. Start a New Drawing
Now when you select File > New > Drawing, your new templates should appear as selectable options.
